Golden Goose Egg is a tier 1 spirit item that earns souls while you hold it, then hatches into those souls plus permanent buffs. It costs 800, starts worth 400, and gains 80 souls a minute as long as you're alive. Hatch it and you get one random permanent buff for every 80 souls it earned.

Holding the egg

  • It grows while you're alive. "Gain souls over time, as long as you are alive." That's 80 souls a minute, on top of the 400 it starts with, so it's worth its 800 price after 5 minutes.
  • You deal 15% less damage while you carry it. That's the price of the investment.
  • It also gives a little sprint speed and out-of-combat health regen.
  • Its stored souls count towards your net worth before you hatch it.

Hatching

Use the egg to hatch it: a 2 second channel. You get the souls it holds, plus one permanent buff per 80 souls it earned. The 400 it started with doesn't count towards buffs. The egg is used up, and you can buy another.

For example, an egg held for 10 minutes has earned 800 souls: hatching it gives you 1,200 souls and 10 buffs.

The buffs

Each buff is random: fire rate, max ammo, cooldown reduction, weapon damage, max health, spirit power, bullet resist, spirit resist, move speed or ability range. Max health comes up most often, move speed and ability range least.

Buffs get stronger as the match goes on, and they're set by the match time when you hatch:

Buff Before 10 min 10 to 30 min After 30 min
Weapon damage +3% +4% +6%
Max health +15 +20 +30
Spirit power +2 +3 +4
Fire rate +1.5% +2% +2.5%

So holding the egg longer earns more buffs, and hatching after the 10 or 30 minute mark makes each one stronger. Meanwhile you're dealing 15% less damage, and the egg stops growing whenever you're dead.
