Haunted souls in Deadlock: what they are and how to keep them

Haunted souls (once called unsecured souls) come from the jungle and are lost if you die. How they turn into normal souls, the Soul Bag, and securing trooper orbs.

Updated 30 October 2026 2 minute read

Haunted souls are souls you can still lose. Souls from the jungle (Haunt camps, Sinner's Sacrifice machines and crates) arrive haunted, and if you die before they turn into normal souls, they're gone. They used to be called unsecured souls; the game now shows them as Haunted Souls.

How haunted souls become safe

You don't have to do anything: haunted souls turn into normal souls on their own, a little every second. Each second about 0.5% of your haunted souls convert, plus a small flat amount that grows as the match goes on. So a big pile takes a while to become safe.

What happens when you die

  • With a big pile (at least 50 souls, plus 5 for every minute of the match), you drop a Soul Bag. Anyone, from either team, can claim it with a heavy melee. It disappears after 3 minutes.
  • With less than that, the haunted souls are simply lost.

Haunted souls also count towards your next boon. If you lose them, you keep the level you already reached but lose the progress towards the next one.

Can you spend haunted souls?

Yes. The shop uses your normal souls first, then haunted ones. Spending them before a risky fight is a way to make sure you don't lose them.

Securing trooper souls is different

When a trooper dies it drops souls as orbs, and "securing" those means something else. One orb falls to the ground for your team to pick up. The other floats in the air: shoot your team's green orb to claim it before the enemy does, or shoot the enemy's orb to deny it. More on this in the beginner's guide and how souls are split.
